Sara Mendiola, human rights defender and Propuesta Cívica director, dies

Sara Lidia Mendiola Landeros, the executive director of the human rights organization Propuesta Cívica, passed away in Mexico City on Saturday at the age of 41. The specific causes of her death have not been publicly disclosed.

Mendiola was a prominent lawyer and activist dedicated to defending freedom of expression and combating impunity in Mexico. Since assuming leadership of Propuesta Cívica in 2017, she coordinated legal representation for dozens of emblematic cases involving violence against journalists, including the high-profile cases of Miroslava Breach, Regina Martínez, and the murder of Javier Valdez Cárdenas.

Beyond litigation, she promoted social initiatives such as 'Tejidos Solidarios,' a network of families of murdered or disappeared journalists, and awareness campaigns like '#HistoriasQueSobreviven.' Throughout her career, she was a vocal critic of the structural deficiencies within Mexican prosecutor's offices, frequently arguing that protection mechanisms are insufficient without effective criminal investigations.
