Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games open with ceremony and diverse flag‑bearer line‑up

The 23rd Commonwealth Games opened on 23 July 2026 at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, marking the first indoor opening ceremony for the event. Over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations are competing in ten sports, a reduction from previous editions to keep the budget around £150 million. Flag‑bearers include India’s Lovlina Borgohain and weight‑lifting star Mirabai Chanu, Scotland’s lawn‑bowls legend Alex Marshall and judoka Sarah Adlington, Jersey’s bowler Malcolm De Sousa and heptathlete Lucy Woodward, and representatives from Canada, Nigeria and other nations.

India entered the Games with a 125‑strong contingent, highlighted by a women’s pairs bowls victory over Malta and boxer Lovlina Borgohain securing at least a bronze after a bye to the semifinals. Canadian cyclists and judoka Laurence Biron, as well as a trio of gymnasts from Odisha’s high‑performance centre, are also slated to compete. The Games were saved from cancellation after Victoria, Australia withdrew; the Australian Commonwealth Games Association contributed £4.6 million to keep the event alive.

The schedule added a “Day 0” of bowls competition, and the programme features 215 medal events, including new para‑sport formats. Broadcast coverage will be live on multiple platforms worldwide, with national feeds in India, Nigeria, Canada and the United Kingdom.
