Germany revamps Eurovision strategy after 2026 flop; Sarah Engels addresses feminist comment controversy

Germany placed 23rd (third‑last) at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 in Vienna, with Sarah Engels performing the song “Fire”. The result sparked criticism of the song choice and preparation, leading SWR and ARD to announce a review of their formats and processes for the 2027 contest. Delegation head Tina Sikorski said the broadcaster will seek clearer profiles, bolder songs and a more distinctive niche for future entries.

During the lead‑up to the contest, Engels caused a social‑media backlash after stating in an interview that she does not consider herself feminist because “I have a wonderful man”. She later clarified on Instagram that she supports gender equality and can be a feminist without adopting a label, stressing that her concern is for women’s empowerment.

After the competition, Engels returned to her role in the musical “Moulin Rouge!” in Cologne, describing a hectic schedule, sleep deprivation and mixed dreams that blended her ESC performance with the stage show. She expressed no regrets about participating, though she noted the poor ranking and said a second participation would be unlikely.
