Sarajevo Canton approves draft law on unused property tax

The Sarajevo Canton Government has approved a draft law introducing an annual tax on unused residential and business properties. The measure aims to stabilize the real estate market, prevent rising property prices, and encourage the use of vacant spaces for citizens and businesses.

Under the proposed law, properties used for permanent residence or those that are regularly rented out will be exempt from the tax. The implementation will involve a coordinated system of reporting by municipalities and the Tax Administration of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Revenue generated from this tax will be split: half will return to the municipality where it was collected, and the other half will go to the Sarajevo Canton Budget. Prime Minister Nihad Uk stated that funds will be specifically directed toward building affordable housing for citizens, with a focus on young married couples. The draft law is now moving into parliamentary procedures and public discussion.
