Sarajevo Canton to subsidize rent for young couples

The Sarajevo Canton Government has approved a decision to subsidize rent for young couples in marriage or common-law unions within the canton for the year 2026. The program provides a monthly subsidy of 300 KM, or the actual amount of the rent if it is lower, for a period of 12 months. To implement this measure, 300,000 KM has been allocated in the 2026 budget.

Eligible applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old, hold Bosnian citizenship, and have maintained continuous residence in Sarajevo Canton for at least three years. Additionally, applicants must have a signed lease agreement for a house or apartment in the canton for a term of no less than 12 months.

The selection process will involve a scoring system based on household size, monthly income per member, educational level, and rent amount. Extra points will be awarded to specific categories, including children of civilian war victims, members of martyr families, and persons with disabilities. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve the living conditions of young people and encourage them to remain in Sarajevo.
