Sarajevo prosecutors await court ruling on fatal tram accident indictment

The Prosecutor’s Office of Sarajevo Canton is awaiting a court decision regarding an indictment against tram driver Adnan Kasapović. Kasapović is charged with a serious criminal offense against the safety of public traffic and endangering public traffic following a fatal accident on February 12, 2026.

The accident occurred in central Sarajevo when a tram derailed at a junction near the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, striking pedestrians and a station. The incident resulted in the death of 23-year-old student Erdoan Morankić and left several others injured, including a teenager who required a leg amputation.

Separately, the Prosecutor’s Office has issued an order not to conduct further investigations into allegations stemming from anonymous reports and media coverage. These allegations concerned the servicing of magnetic brakes, video surveillance systems, and advertising lease contracts within tram vehicles. Following a detailed analysis of evidence, authorities determined that these specific reported acts did not constitute criminal offenses. To maintain transparency, the Prosecutor’s Office intends to release an anonymized version of the decision to the public.
