The Sarajevo Canton Prosecution has filed an indictment against tram driver Adnan Kasapović following a fatal accident in February 2026. Kasapović is charged with serious criminal offenses against public traffic safety and endangering public transport. The indictment, which has been forwarded to the Sarajevo Cantonal Court, follows an extensive investigation involving multiple expert testimonies and evidence collection.

The investigation determined that the accident, which occurred near the US Embassy and the National Museum, was caused by human error. Specifically, the driver was traveling at 63.3 km/h in a zone where the speed limit is 20 km/h. The incident resulted in the death of 23-year-old student Erdoan Morankić and caused severe injuries to 17-year-old Ella Jovanović, who subsequently required a leg amputation.

The tragedy triggered widespread public protests in Sarajevo, eventually leading to the resignation of Sarajevo Canton Prime Minister Nihad Uk and the fall of the regional government. In response to the incident, the public transport company GRAS withdrew all Czech-made ČKD trams from service.

While the driver faces charges, the prosecution declined to investigate allegations regarding magnetic brake maintenance, video surveillance systems, or advertising lease contracts, stating that the reported issues did not constitute criminal offenses. The GRAS workers' union has expressed support for Kasapović, maintaining that the accident was caused by an unpredictable vehicle failure rather than driver error.
