Sarajevo tramway expansion reaches Hrasnica following successful test run
A successful test run of the newly constructed tramway line from Ilidža to Hrasnica was completed in the early hours of August 20. This marks the first expansion of the Sarajevo tram network since 1962, reconnecting Hrasnica to the city via tram after more than six decades.
The project involved the construction of 12.9 kilometers of track, 20 stops, two new turning loops, and two electrical substations in Butmir and Hrasnica. The infrastructure also includes 251 contact network poles and a signaling system integrated with adaptive traffic management.
Representatives from the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Transport, the public transport company GRAS, and the Turkish construction consortium Yapi Merkezi and Yapiray attended the test. While the initial run was successful, further testing and final works are required to meet all technical and legal requirements. Regular service on the Baščaršija – Hrasnica line is expected to begin by the end of this summer.
