Sarajevo launches new tram line extension to Hrasnica
The first trams have commenced service on the newly extended line between Hrasnica and Baščaršija in Sarajevo. This 12.9-kilometer expansion marks the first extension of the Sarajevo tram network since 1962.
Described by the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Transport as the largest transport infrastructure project since the Olympics, the development included the construction of new stops, two electric substations, 251 contact network poles, and significant underground utility relocations, including sewage and storm collectors. The new line, designated as Line 11 in honor of football captain Edin Džeko, will operate with departures every 11 minutes from the Hrasnica station.
Existing bus lines and other tram routes in the area will remain operational to ensure service continuity during the transition. The project was invested in by the Sarajevo Canton Ministry of Transport and executed by a consortium of Turkish companies, Yapi Merkezi Insaat ve Sanayi A.S. and Yapiray Demiryolu Insaat Sistemleri Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S.
