Sarallar organization members face legal developments in Turkey

Legal proceedings involving members of the Sarallar criminal organization continue to draw attention in Turkey. Alaattin İlyas Saral, who was subject to an Interpol red notice, was apprehended by Belgian police in Brussels while attempting to travel to Tanzania. Following his extradition to Turkey, he was detained at Istanbul Airport in June 2023. However, he was subsequently released during the judicial process and has since been participating in his trial without detention. His charges included founding and managing an armed organization for the purpose of committing crimes, as well as qualified robbery.

In a separate matter related to the group's history, Hüseyin Mert Saral was sentenced following a 2017 fatal shooting in Beykoz. The victim, Mehmet Ali Büyüksarıoğlu, was killed in a restaurant attack. Prosecutors alleged the murder was a premeditated act of revenge for the 2005 killing of Hüseyin Saral in Rome. While the defendant argued the encounter was coincidental and unplanned, the court moved forward with sentencing regarding the incident.
