Sarandi court sentences man for attempted murder at futsal match
A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison for the attempted murder of a 37-year-old spectator during a Gauchão Série C futsal match in Sarandi, Rio Grande do Sul.
The attack occurred in June 2025 when the suspect entered the stands at the Pedro de Marco Gymnasium and stabbed the victim in the leg. According to the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS), the motive was a political dispute stemming from the 2024 municipal elections.
The jury convicted the defendant of attempted qualified homicide—citing base motives and the use of a method that hindered the victim's defense—as well as causing a disturbance at a sporting event under the General Sports Law. The defendant, who was already in preventive detention, will serve his sentence initially in a closed regime.
