Sarasota Police Officer arrested and fired for database misuse

Cory Waiters, a 38-year-old former officer with the Sarasota Police Department, has been terminated and arrested following an investigation into the alleged misuse of law enforcement technology. The investigation began on August 6, 2026, after the department discovered Waiters had allegedly misused restricted search databases, specifically DAVID and Flock.

Waiters faces multiple charges, including a felony for offenses against users of computer systems, networks, and electronic devices, a felony for official misconduct, and a misdemeanor for violating public records law. He was placed on paid administrative leave on August 7 and was subsequently terminated on August 19 based on probable cause developed during the criminal probe.

Following the initial discovery, the department conducted an agency-wide audit to ensure compliance with technology policies. The audit, completed on August 14, indicated agency-wide compliance. Police Chief Rex Troche stated that the department takes allegations of misconduct seriously and will address actions that fall short of professional standards. Waiters is currently being held at the Sarasota County Jail.
