Sarawak allocates billions for rural development and disease research

The Sarawak government has announced significant allocations within its 2027 budget to bolster rural development and public health infrastructure. Under the RM10.098 billion development expenditure, RM6.4 billion is earmarked for rural areas to improve basic infrastructure, expand economic opportunities, and raise living standards in alignment with the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030.

To address cost-of-living pressures, the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS) will receive RM650 million. This program provides financial assistance to eligible recipients, including RM1,100 for B40 households, RM600 for senior citizens, and RM375 for single individuals.

In the healthcare sector, Sarawak has allocated RM400 million to establish the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC) in Samarahan. The initiative aims to strengthen the state’s capacity to study tropical infectious diseases and prepare for future outbreaks. To build local expertise, the state is funding postgraduate studies in medicine and drug development, including sending researchers to institutions such as the London Tropical Disease Centre.
