Sarawak cancer cases rise to over 27,000
Cancer cases in Sarawak have reached 27,208, according to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. This figure includes 2,995 newly diagnosed cases and 24,253 follow-up cases, marking a steady increase in clinical workload from 20,851 cases in 2021.
Breast cancer remains the most prevalent type with 476 recorded cases, followed closely by colorectal cancer with 471 cases. Other significant diagnoses include lung cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, and cervical cancer. Dr Sim emphasized the need for strengthened healthcare delivery and continuous professional development for medical personnel to manage the rising burden.
In response to local health needs, a free breast cancer awareness and screening programme was recently held in Kuching as part of the ‘Caring Through Art’ initiative. During the session, two abnormal cases were identified among 33 participants, and those individuals were advised to undergo further medical examinations.
