Sarawak closes 591 schools due to worsening haze

Authorities in Sarawak have ordered the temporary closure of 591 schools across 10 districts due to worsening haze conditions, affecting approximately 197,323 students. The closures, which began on August 20, 2026, impact primary and secondary schools in areas including Kuching, Padawan, Bau, Lundu, Samarahan, Simunjang, Serian, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, and Betong.

To ensure learning continuity, students are instructed to conduct activities from home. The Sarawak Department of Education stated the decision is a preventive measure to protect the health and well-being of students from unhealthy air quality.

Additionally, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee has established that childcare centers (taska) will be closed immediately if the Air Pollution Index (API) reaches 200, a level categorized as ‘very unhealthy’. Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri emphasized that these measures aim to protect children from exposure to haze that could impact their health and cause difficulties for their families.
