Sarawak expands bioeconomy and disease research initiatives

Sarawak is expanding its bioeconomy and scientific research capabilities by leveraging the region's extensive biodiversity. At the launch of the Sarawak SHINE International Conference 2026, Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasized the strategic importance of the Sarawak Infectious Disease Centre (SIDC) in converting research into practical public health outcomes.

The SIDC has implemented community-based disease surveillance programs to monitor infectious diseases in rural areas, enhancing early threat detection. The center maintains over 30 collaborations, including partnerships with Murdoch University, the Asia Pathogen Genomics Initiative, and the UKSEA Vax Hub, focusing on vaccine development, genomic surveillance, and biomedical training.

Additionally, the Premier called for medical experts to investigate regenerative medicine. He suggested exploring how Sarawak’s biological resources could be used to develop bio-based cells to address aging and diseases such as cancer. These initiatives aim to strengthen the state's knowledge economy through the sustainable use of its natural forest resources.
