Sarawak hosts 22nd ICOMOS General Assembly and Scientific Symposium
Sarawak is hosting the 22nd International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) General Assembly and Scientific Symposium in Kuching. The event brings together over 1,000 delegates from more than 110 countries to discuss heritage preservation and share international expertise.
Datuk Len Talif Salleh, Sarawak's Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, emphasized that cultural and natural heritage must be integrated into development planning from the earliest stages. He stated that heritage should not be viewed as an obstacle to transformation, but rather as an asset that enriches the state's progress. To ensure sustainable development, he called for strengthened collaboration between heritage authorities, planning agencies, research institutions, and local communities.
Sarawak aims to incorporate heritage preservation into its broader economic and environmental policies, guided by frameworks such as the Sarawak Biodiversity Master Plan and the Sarawak Sustainability Roadmap. The symposium provides a platform for local students and professionals to interact with global experts in the field of heritage conservation.
