Sarawak launches RM5.8 million LED street lighting project
A RM5.8 million project is underway to install and rehabilitate street lighting along an 11.9-kilometre stretch of the Petra Jaya–Rambungan route in Sarawak. The initiative involves the installation of 794 LED streetlights and the construction of 11kV overhead lines, including six 50kVA transformers, to improve visibility and safety for drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians.
Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Sarawak Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department, noted that the project aims to address long-standing lighting issues that have persisted since the road was completed in 2015. Previous lighting infrastructure suffered from deterioration and significant losses due to vandalism and cable theft.
The project, which includes the installation of underground cables and control boxes, is scheduled for completion by June 16, 2027. It is expected to benefit residents in the Pantai Damai and Tupong constituencies, particularly in the Matang section.
