Sarawak lawmakers prioritize rural infrastructure and road connectivity
During the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sessions, various representatives addressed infrastructure and development priorities for the state. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving access to basic services and infrastructure in interior communities, specifically mentioning Telang Usan and Mulu. Efforts are underway to assess and gazette former logging roads as state roads to improve safety and maintenance in remote areas.
Assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang urged the government to prioritize a road corridor from Nanga Pelagus through Merit, Anap, and Sangan to Bintulu. He noted that this route could serve as a strategic economic corridor, potentially linking Sarawak to Nusantara, Indonesia’s new capital, and facilitating cross-border trade and investment.
Additionally, Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang called for a dedicated maintenance allocation for public facilities built under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP). He warned that without sufficient funding and manpower, the increasing number of community facilities could place unsustainable pressure on local authorities responsible for their upkeep.
