Sarawak local authorities urged to adopt sustainable waste management

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has called on local authorities (PBT) in Sarawak to strengthen their role in sustainable waste management. Speaking at the Green and Geopark Excellence Awards (GAGA) 2026 in Kuching, Dr Sim emphasized that local authorities should utilize their power to introduce by-laws and regulations to promote environmental sustainability.

He suggested that local authorities move beyond simple waste collection and disposal by exploring waste segregation, waste-to-energy initiatives, and methods to generate economic value from waste. Dr Sim noted that local action is essential to ensuring sustainability agendas are implemented effectively within communities, rather than relying solely on high-level policies.
