Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg Defends English, Boosts Education and Tech Plans
Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said speaking English does not diminish patriotism, arguing that true patriotism is shown through development and global respect. He highlighted that English proficiency gives access to new knowledge, especially in science and technology, which will drive the state’s progress.
The state has allocated RM25 million to the Sarawak Education Enhancement Programme and promotes the Dual Language Programme, which teaches science and mathematics in English to better prepare students. Openg cited local talent such as SMD Semiconductor chief executive Shariman Jamil, who runs a laboratory in Cardiff and collaborates with the University of Bristol on chip technology. He also announced Sarawak’s goal to launch its own satellite by 2030 to support data storage and management.
Referencing the small island nation Cape Verde, Openg urged Sarawak to emulate its success in education and technology through strong leadership, responsible management and ambition. He noted additional initiatives like the SEED programme and the development of a STEM ecosystem to equip the next generation for future challenges, including climate change.
