Sarawak Premier Abang Johari promotes Knowledge Waqf to harness AI

At the International Waqf Da’wah Convention 2026 held in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg called for the waqf system to be expanded beyond land and physical assets to include knowledge, research, innovation and artificial intelligence. He introduced the term “Knowledge Waqf” and said it should become a pillar for a knowledge‑driven economy and for strengthening the Muslim ummah.

Abang Johari argued that waqf must be transformed in its management, development and utilisation to stay relevant in a world shaped by AI, digital technology, climate change and widening socio‑economic gaps. He stressed that an effective waqf ecosystem could complement government spending, spur private‑sector philanthropy and generate sustainable resources for education, health, entrepreneurship, affordable housing, environmental conservation, humanitarian aid and community resilience. Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah of Perak attended the convention and posed for a photo with the premier.

The premier, who also chairs the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (PERKIM), said the new Knowledge Waqf model would encourage scholars, scientists, professionals and institutions to share expertise as a lasting charitable endowment.
