Sarawak targets carbon economy and floating LNG development
Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg has outlined strategic economic diversification plans for the Mukah division, focusing on technology, carbon management, and the hydrogen sector. He highlighted the potential for carbon sequestration within the region's extensive peatlands to support a carbon-trading economy.
In a separate energy development initiative, Sarawak is collaborating with a Norwegian energy company to develop floating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) technology in Kuching through Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS). This partnership, which has been in discussion for over a year, leverages Norwegian expertise in managing floating LNG vessels and tanks. The floating LNG facility is expected to begin supply by 2029 and will be part of a larger low-carbon complex and deep-water port development in Tanjung Manis.
These efforts aim to add value to gas resources and transition the state toward a low-carbon economy, utilizing advancements in hydrogen and methanol production to create new economic opportunities for local communities.
