Sarawak targets economic diversification in Northern Zone

Sarawak officials are outlining plans to transform the Northern Zone of the state into a diversified economic driver. Miri is being positioned as a high-tech energy hub, leveraging its existing oil and gas expertise to transition into energy technology, research, and higher-value industrial activities.

Sarawak Premier Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg emphasized the need to adapt to global technological shifts, moving beyond traditional resource extraction toward a broader energy mix including hydroelectric, solar, biomass, and gas. This strategy aims to support a transition toward cleaner, lower-carbon energy systems.

Deputy Premier Awang Tengah Ali Hasan highlighted the strategic importance of the Northern Zone's proximity to Brunei, Kalimantan, and Sabah for cross-border trade. While Bintulu remains a strength in petrochemicals and gas, other areas like Lawas and Limbang are being targeted for agricultural development to enhance food security, and Baram is noted for its tourism and cultural potential.
