Sarawak targets increased paddy yields to boost rice security
The Sarawak government is implementing a strategy to enhance rice self-sufficiency through expanded paddy production, modern agricultural technology, and improved farm management. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg announced that the state has identified approximately 14,000 hectares of land for potential development, with 7,000 hectares already gazetted for production.
To bridge the productivity gap—aiming for yields of 8 to 12 tonnes per hectare compared to the current average of 1.2 tonnes—the state is prioritizing research into improved seed varieties, including hybrid and perennial rice. A study conducted with Yunnan University on peatland in Baram, Miri, has shown promising results for perennial rice, which can produce new shoots without seasonal replanting.
Financially, the state has allocated RM1 billion for irrigation infrastructure and is pursuing a collaborative model that integrates private sector investment with smallholder farmers. This approach aims to ensure commercial viability by combining government-funded infrastructure with private capital and expertise, while maintaining the involvement of local smallholders in the production chain.
