Sarawak wildlife teams conduct crocodile capture operations

Wildlife management efforts in Sarawak are intensifying to mitigate human-crocodile conflict. In Sarikei, multiple operations have successfully captured several large crocodiles, including specimens measuring 15.8 feet, 11.3 feet, and 11 feet. Another recent overnight operation in Marudi secured three reptiles ranging from 8.7 to 10 feet in length.

The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) is actively managing the reptile population through various methods. This includes direct capture operations to protect local communities and fishermen near waterways. Additionally, the SFC has introduced a licensing system for the collection of crocodile eggs to manage populations in a controlled and sustainable manner.

While the egg collection initiative has seen low uptake, officials noted its importance in reducing risks to workers and residents, particularly when nests are discovered in areas like oil palm plantations. Wildlife officers continue to monitor the situation to ensure public safety in regions where human activity and crocodile habitats overlap.
