Sarbananda Sonowal reviews India's green shipping corridors

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has reviewed progress on India’s green shipping corridors and the readiness of major ports to adopt alternative marine fuels. The initiatives aim to position India as a central hub for cleaner maritime trade routes through decarbonisation efforts.

During a review involving the National Centre of Excellence for Green Ports and Shipping and the Rocky Mountain Institute, officials discussed strategies to accelerate the adoption of low- and zero-emission technologies across the shipping ecosystem. Three major ports—Deendayal Port Authority, Paradip Port Authority, and V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority—reported progress on developing green fuel bunkering hubs to support alternative fuel infrastructure.

Additionally, Kamarajar Port Limited has equipped its coal terminals with shore power facilities. This allows berthed vessels to draw electricity from the shore rather than operating onboard engines, reducing emissions while at port.
