Sardine demand surge causes supermarket shortages

A social media phenomenon known as ‘Sardinecore’ or ‘Sardine Girl Summer’ has triggered a significant surge in demand for canned sardines, leading to supply shortages in major supermarkets.

Retailers including Aldi, Rewe, Kaufland, and Lidl have reported difficulties in maintaining stock. Aldi Nord attributed the scarcity to challenging fishing conditions, while Lidl noted that availability is being impacted by rising consumer demand. This spike in interest is reflected in data showing Google searches for canned sardines have increased by up to 2,750% in recent months.

The trend is driven by both lifestyle aesthetics and perceived health benefits. Harvard researcher Nick Norwitz documented a self-experiment involving a month of near-exclusive sardine consumption, reporting an increase in his Omega-3 index to approximately 16 percent. Beyond nutrition, the ‘Sardinecore’ aesthetic has permeated fashion and beauty, influencing everything from clothing prints to nail art.
