Sardines identified as highly nutritious alternative to salmon

Sardines are being highlighted as a highly nutritious and affordable alternative to salmon. Nutrition expert Samantha Cassetty notes that these small fish offer significant advantages, including accessibility, ease of preservation, and high nutrient density.

Sardines are rich in marine-based omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA and DHA, which are known for anti-inflammatory properties and supporting brain, heart, and metabolic health. Cassetty suggests that canned sardines may even contain more of these powerful nutrients than salmon. The American Heart Association (AHA) includes sardines in its recommended list of fatty fish for omega-3 intake, alongside salmon, mackerel, herring, and anchovies.

Regular consumption of such fish is linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Additionally, the omega-3 content in sardines can support brain development in children and pregnant women, and may contribute to increased gray matter in the brain, potentially reducing the risk of neurological diseases.
