Sardinia court suspends hunting for specific wildlife species

The Regional Administrative Court (T.A.R.) of Sardinia has partially suspended the 2025-2027 regional hunting calendar. The suspension specifically affects hunting for the Sardinian partridge, the Sardinian hare, and the wild rabbit on September 20 and 27, 2026.

The legal action was initiated by the environmental association Gruppo d’Intervento Giuridico (GrIG), supported by LAC and LIPU – BirdLife Italia. The appeal alleges that the Sardinia Region has failed to send census data for these species to ISPRA for years, violating conservation requirements.

The court's decree noted potential “grave and irreparable damage,” stating that authorized hunting days could lead to the “irreversible slaughter of wildlife.” The court also cited a lack of proper investigation and insufficient motivation regarding the environmental reality of the region. A final hunting day scheduled for October 4, 2026, will be reviewed during a hearing on September 30, 2026.
