Sardinia declares water emergency as Maccheronis reservoir nears depletion

A water emergency has been declared in the high Baronia and low Gallura regions of Sardinia due to severe drought conditions. The Maccheronis reservoir on the Posada River has reached critical levels, containing less than 2.2 million cubic meters of water, which represents approximately 10% of its total capacity.

In response, the Board of Directors of the Consorzio di Bonifica della Sardegna Centrale has implemented immediate measures to preserve remaining water resources. All irrigation distribution has been suspended to prioritize water for civil use, including drinking water, food production, hygiene, and livestock watering. Exceptions may be granted for specialized sectors such as greenhouses, nurseries, and orchards upon request.
