Sardinia depopulation: criticism of residency incentives

Aldo Salaris, regional coordinator of the Riformatori, has criticized the Sardinian regional government's decision to allocate 56 million euros toward incentives for individuals relocating to the island. The program offers contributions of up to 30,000 euros for those transferring their residency.

Salaris argues that these funds divert resources away from structural investments necessary to create stable employment and improve essential services. He contends that addressing depopulation requires tackling the underlying reasons people leave, such as inadequate healthcare and seasonal employment patterns.

Specific concerns were raised regarding healthcare efficiency, noting that Agenas data shows only 64.3% of specialist visits in Sardinia are provided within required timeframes, a nearly four-percentage-point decline from the previous year. Salaris advocates for prioritizing investments in agriculture, livestock, and environmental heritage through Forestas to foster long-term economic stability rather than temporary relocation incentives.
