Italian towns strain under summer tourism as health and safety services falter

In Ribera, Sicily, the seasonal tourist medical guard service remains inactive for 2026 because the ASP of Agrigento received no applications from doctors, leaving the service closed for non‑resident tourists. The municipality has been negotiating with the district health authority to use local facilities and to encourage physicians to take voluntary extra hours.

In Udine, northeastern Italy, officials clarified that public safety rests with the Questura and the Prefecture, while the municipal police focus on road matters and incident reporting. A new officer will join the force on 1 August, and the police reported seizing more than three kilograms of hashish and 31 grams of cocaine – the largest drug haul in the city's history – with a new detection dog, Oasis, slated for future deployment.

On the island of Sardinia, emergency departments are overwhelmed by a surge of tourists, handling over 250 daily visits. Hospital director Paolo Pinna Parpaglia warned of severe staff shortages, insufficient beds, and patients being treated in corridors. The island operates only about twenty tourist medical guard units, which work intermittently and cannot cover the growing demand.
