Sardinia expands air connectivity and tourism capacity

Sardinia is experiencing a significant increase in tourism and air travel capacity. The regional government reports that winter tourist presence has risen by 32% compared to two years ago. Specifically, Cagliari airport has seen a 17% increase in available seats for 2026, with over 12,000 scheduled flights providing more than 2.1 million seats.

To support this growth and manage seasonal demand, Aeroitalia is expanding its flight offerings between Sardinia and mainland Italy for the 2026/2027 holiday season. The airline is adding point-to-point connections from Alghero and Olbia to Genoa and Trieste, while also increasing flight frequency between Cagliari and Florence. These measures aim to alleviate pressure on major hubs like Rome-Fiumicino and Milan-Linate.

Regional authorities are also focusing on the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector to extend the tourism season beyond peak months. By integrating hospitality services, professional spaces, and cultural heritage, the region aims to remain competitive year-round and distribute economic opportunities more evenly across the island.
