Sardinia expands luxury cruise and yachting tourism

Sardinia is increasingly positioning itself as a premier destination for luxury maritime tourism. The region is seeing a significant rise in high-end cruise arrivals, with 54 luxury ship landings projected through December. For 2026, the updated program anticipates 96 luxury and ultra-luxury arrivals, catering to an estimated 26,500 passengers out of a total expected 800,000 cruisers.

Key ports such as Cagliari and Olbia are central to this growth, with Cagliari hosting 46 landings and Olbia 29. The luxury segment shows particular strength during the shoulder seasons, with a notable increase in scheduled arrivals during September, October, and November.

The nautical industry in Sardinia is valued at over 600 million euros. However, the rapid influx of vessels has sparked local debate regarding the environmental impact on the coastline and whether the economic benefits are sufficiently distributed across the island. Concerns have been raised about the crowding of bays, such as the Golfo di Cala di Volpe, and the potential for luxury tourism to impact the region's pristine landscape.
