Sardinia explores wave energy projects amid environmental debates
In Northwest Sardinia, experimental projects are underway in Alghero and Porto Torres to develop 'blue energy' as an alternative to large-scale offshore wind farms. In the Capo Caccia-Isola Piana marine protected area, the Wepa (Water Energy Point Absorber) prototype has been redeployed. This hybrid floating system, developed through the European Vague project by Porto Conte Park and the Polytechnic University of Turin, combines wave, solar, and wind energy to produce electricity and desalinate seawater.
Separately, regional political debate has emerged regarding subsidies for green waste treatment plants. Serena Pellegrino of the Alliance Greens and Left (AVS) has criticized a new regulation providing financial contributions to facilities processing at least 1,000 tons of green waste annually. Pellegrino expressed concerns that smaller plants, which are excluded from funding, may lack adequate oversight and resources to prevent groundwater pollution, noting that a shortage of inspection personnel remains a significant issue.
