Sardinia faces demographic and educational challenges

Sardinia is facing significant structural challenges regarding demographics, education, and employment, according to data from the Eurostat regional yearbook. The region reports some of the lowest fertility rates in Europe, with values in Cagliari and South Sardinia falling below 0.9 children per woman, well below the EU average of 1.34. Projections suggest Sardinia could become Italy’s oldest region by 2050.

Educational attainment also lags behind European targets. Only 23.8% of residents aged 25 to 34 have attained tertiary education, significantly lower than the EU's 2030 goal of 45%. Additionally, the employment rate stands at 62.3%, compared to the European average of 76.1%.

In response to these challenges and the geographic isolation of inland areas, there is a growing trend in online diploma programs. Digital education is helping to bridge the gap between remote areas and urban centers, offering flexibility for adults re-entering the workforce and providing young people with opportunities to invest in their training without leaving the territory.
