Sardinia faces food sector labor shortages and declining tourism spending

The food and beverage sector in Sardinia is facing significant operational challenges, characterized by both labor shortages and declining tourist spending. The shortage is particularly acute in artisanal roles; 71.2% of planned hires for bakers and pastry chefs are difficult to fulfill, placing Sardinia 10th in Italy for this specific difficulty.

Simultaneously, the tourism industry is reporting a disconnect between high visitor numbers and economic value. While presence and bookings appear to be at record levels, local operators report a contraction in consumption. Confesercenti indicates that spending in the restaurant and tourism-related services sector has dropped by 20% to 25%, with some areas seeing declines as high as 40%. This shift suggests that tourists are becoming more price-sensitive, opting for cheaper alternatives like supermarkets rather than dining out or utilizing local services.
