Sardinia faces low productivity and demographic decline
A report by the CNA Sardegna Study Center highlights significant economic challenges in Sardinia, noting that the region ranks third to last in Italy for value added per hour worked. The regional economy produces 34.8 euros per hour, compared to the national average of 43.2 euros.
In the province of Oristano, territorial competitiveness ranks 97th out of 107 Italian provinces. The province faces severe issues with demographics, ranking last nationally (107th), and accessibility (104th). While infrastructure ranks relatively well at 37th, innovation and economic development remain low.
The report identifies several structural causes for this low productivity, including the small size of businesses—with 59% of employees working in companies with fewer than ten people—low private spending on research and development, and high credit costs. Experts suggest that the previous growth in tourism and construction temporarily masked these weaknesses, but as those sectors slow, the structural issues are becoming more apparent. There is a call for a productivity pact to support small business growth, innovation, and human capital retention to prevent the continued emptying of internal areas.
