Sardinia faces severe workforce decline due to demographic crisis
Sardinia faces a severe demographic crisis that threatens its long-term economic stability. According to projections from the CNA Sardegna Study Center, the region could see its working-age population (ages 20-64) shrink by approximately 366,000 people by 2054, a contraction of over 40%. This decline could result in a loss of up to 219,000 potential workers, making it the most exposed region in Italy to such demographic shifts.
The shrinking workforce is already manifesting in immediate labor shortages. FIPE reports that the hospitality sector is struggling significantly, noting that in two out of three cases, vacancies remain unfilled not due to lack of candidate skill, but a total absence of applicants. This shortage is driven by structural issues including demographic decline, youth migration abroad, and challenges in balancing work-life commitments, such as evening and weekend shifts.
Experts warn that even if employment rates and participation levels improve, they may not be sufficient to offset the sheer scale of the population loss. The contraction is expected to be most intense among the 20-24 age group, which could see its numbers more than halved, severely weakening generational turnover.
