Sardinia launches pilot project to reduce screen use in restaurants

Fifteen restaurants in Sardinia are participating in a month-long experimental initiative titled “A tavola senza schermi” (At the table without screens). The project, promoted by the regional guarantor for childhood and adolescence, Anna Cau, in collaboration with Fipe Confcommercio Sardegna, aims to discourage the use of smartphones and tablets during meals to encourage face-to-face communication between parents and children.

Rather than imposing a formal ban or fines, the initiative relies on a voluntary “disconnection pact.” Participating establishments will offer families a “meeting kit” containing games, coloring materials, and educational brochures designed by the Italian Federation of Pediatricians. These materials are intended to raise awareness about the risks of excessive digital use and the importance of social interaction for child development.

Experts involved in the project highlight that excessive screen time can hinder language development, sleep, and emotional regulation in children. If the pilot yields positive results, the initiative may be expanded to more restaurants across the region.
