Sardinia launches pilot program to reduce screen use in restaurants
A pilot initiative titled “A tavola senza schermi” (At the table without screens) has launched in Sardinia, Italy, to encourage families to disconnect from digital devices during meals. The one-month experiment involves 15 participating restaurants across cities including Cagliari, Nuoro, Sassari, and Olbia.
Under the voluntary program, guests are encouraged to store mobile phones and tablets in pockets or designated baskets. To facilitate social interaction, restaurants provide families with “encounter sets” containing analog activities such as games, colored pencils, and quizzes. The project aims to protect minors from inappropriate digital content and promote face-to-face conversation.
The initiative was developed through a collaboration between the regional children and youth commissioner, Anna Cau, and the hospitality association Fipe Confcommercio Sardegna. It also receives informational support from the Italian Federation of Pediatricians. While participation is voluntary and no strict bans are enforced, the program seeks to redefine the dining experience by prioritizing human connection over digital entertainment.
