Sardinia political debate intensifies over WRC future
Political debate has emerged in Sardinia following the conclusion of the Rally Italia Sardegna, which hosted the final stage of the FIA World Rally Championship in Alghero for the first time.
Regional Councilor Valdo Di Nolfo advocated for the event to remain in Sardinia, citing the economic and promotional benefits the rally brings to the island. He noted that the regional government has committed financial support to ensure the event continues through 2030 and urged national sports officials to maintain the current arrangement.
In response, minority group leaders in Alghero criticized Di Nolfo’s timing and focus. They argued that the decision to move the championship rests with the WRC Promoter and the FIA, rather than national ministers. The opposition suggested that political efforts in Rome had already laid the groundwork for a candidacy in the capital and proposed the creation of a permanent, multi-party strategic table to develop a concrete plan for returning the World Rally Championship to Alghero.
