Sardinia political dispute erupts over WRC Rally relocation

Political tensions have escalated in Sardinia following the official announcement that the World Rally Championship (WRC) will move from the island to Rome starting in 2027.

Regional Councilor Valdo Di Nolfo has criticized the decision, labeling those involved as ‘traitors’ of Sardinia. Di Nolfo specifically targeted Salvatore Deidda, a member of Fratelli d’Italia and President of the Chamber's Transport Commission, accusing him of failing to defend the event. Di Nolfo cited changes to ACI governance and recent legislative decrees as factors that paved the way for the relocation.

In response, representatives from Fratelli d’Italia have defended the regional majority, accusing Di Nolfo of being a ‘sleeping spectator’ who failed to take proactive measures to protect the rally's presence in Alghero and Olbia during previous months. The dispute highlights a significant political rift regarding the loss of a major sporting, economic, and touristic asset for the region.
