Sardinia President challenges prisoner transfers and defends healthcare

Sardinia's regional president, Alessandra Todde, is addressing two major administrative and social challenges facing the region.

Regarding the justice system, Todde announced plans to challenge the transfer of 88 high-security detainees under the 41-bis regime from Viterbo to the Uta prison in Cagliari. The regional government intends to appeal to the TAR and the Constitutional Court, citing a lack of consultation and communication from the central government. Todde estimated the economic and healthcare impact of these transfers at approximately 15 million euros and expressed frustration over being excluded from the decision-making process.

On the healthcare front, Todde defended the regional administration against accusations of inaction. She highlighted that despite the expiration of certain medical contracts, emergency services remain operational. To address staffing shortages, the region has launched public recruitment drives for specialties such as Pulmonology, Orthopedics, and Pediatrics. Additionally, 16 million euros have been allocated to incentivize medical professionals to work in more isolated and disadvantaged areas of the island.
