Global green economy trends analyzed at Rimini summit
The States General of the Green Economy, held in Rimini during the Ecomondo event, highlighted the complex geopolitical landscape of the global energy transition. Experts and policymakers discussed the varying paces of ecological transition across major economies.
China has halted the growth of its CO2 emissions but remains the world’s largest emitter, accounting for 27 percent of global emissions. In contrast, the United States added 40GW of renewables but saw a 1.9 percent increase in CO2 emissions. While Europe has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 37 percent since 1990, it has spent 337 billion euros on fossil fuel imports.
Africa, responsible for only 3 percent of historical CO2 emissions, faces the highest climate risks, with projections suggesting a 50 percent excess mortality rate by 2050. In Italy, discussions focused on reducing the nation's 74 percent energy dependency on foreign sources by leveraging domestic expertise in mechanics, plant engineering, and circular material management.
