Sardinia reopens Monte Pino road after 13‑year closure

The provincial road 38bis at Monte Pino in Gallura, Sardinia, was officially reopened on 7 August 2026, restoring the link between Olbia and Tempio Pausania. The road had been closed since November 2013 when a bridge collapse caused by Cyclone Cleopatra killed 19 people.

The reconstruction, costing about €18 million, was carried out by ANAS and contractor Vitalia under a plan approved by the Sardinian regional government. The works were completed within the 24‑month schedule, with €10 million of regional funding and a coordination unit that involved the province and other authorities. The inauguration ceremony was attended by ANAS CEO Claudio Andrea Gemme, Regional Public Works Assessor Antonio Piu, Olbia mayor Settimo Nizzi, parish priest Mauro Bucciero and local citizen representatives.

Officials highlighted the road’s importance for local mobility and economic activity, noting that the reopening ends a 13‑year period of isolation for the northern Sardinian communities.
