Sardinia sports controversy follows alleged remarks on island annexation

Political tensions have risen in Sardinia following controversial remarks attributed to a national official of the Italian Baseball and Softball Federation (FIBS). According to Totoni Sanna, president of the FIBS Sardegna regional committee, a federation official allegedly stated during a council meeting that “unfortunately, Sicily and Sardinia have been annexed to Italy.”

Sanna described the comment as a grave error and a sign of historical ignorance. Regional councilor Aldo Salaris has called for structural solutions to address the challenges of insularity in sports, noting that Sardinian clubs, such as Alghero’s Catalana Baseball Softball, face disproportionate logistical costs and travel difficulties compared to mainland teams.

The controversy was sparked by an incident involving Catalana Baseball Softball, which reportedly faced sporting sanctions and bureaucratic complications after being unable to complete an away trip to Mondovì.
