Sardinian restaurants launch screen-free dining initiative

A group of 15 restaurants in Sardinia, Italy, is participating in a pilot project titled “A tavola senza schermi” (A table without screens) to encourage families to disconnect from digital devices during meals.

Led by Anna Cau, an Italian children’s advocate, the initiative aims to reduce excessive screen time for minors and foster real-world social interaction. Rather than imposing strict bans or fines, participating restaurants invite families to set aside phones and other devices during dinner.

To facilitate engagement, restaurant staff provide children under 18 with reconnection kits developed by the Italian federation of pediatricians. These kits include games and drawing activities designed to stimulate conversation and help children share their daily experiences with their parents.
