Italian retail faces mixed sales trends amid summer discounts and promotion shifts

Summer sales in Sardinia’s Isola region showed a mixed picture in the first month: about one‑third of stores reported a sales decline, another third saw growth or stable results, and the remaining third were unchanged. According to the Confesercenti‑Fismo monitoring of 100 clothing and footwear outlets, 37 % recorded a drop of less than 15 %, while 34 % reported increases. The July heat reduced foot traffic in city centres, prompting a shift from casual “window‑shopping” to more purpose‑driven purchases. The association warned that a structural contraction in consumer spending threatens neighbourhood retail and called for a postponement of the sales period and uniform national rules.

A separate market study by Circana highlighted that promotional pressure rose by 0.8 percentage points in the first half of 2026, yet the effectiveness of discounts fell by eight points. Consumers are now less responsive to pure price cuts, favouring tailored offers, loyalty programmes and digital channels. The report suggests retailers must adopt smarter, data‑driven promotions.

Data from the CNCC‑EY observatory indicated that Italian shopping centres continued modest growth in the first half of 2026, with overall sales up 2.2 % and footfall up 1.8 %. Food‑and‑beverage outlets led the performance, posting a 3.8 % rise, followed by electronics and personal‑care categories. Operators expressed confidence in sustained growth.

Broader consumption patterns show Italians now spend a larger share of their budget on services (56 % of total consumption value) than on goods (44 %). This reflects a long‑term shift toward a tertiary‑oriented economy and higher living standards.

In Oristano, the “Shopping sotto le stelle” night‑market faced a sharp drop in merchant participation, with only 43 businesses joining this year versus over 100 in better‑attended editions. Organisers cited limited resources and rising costs, raising doubts about the event’s future.
